Palmetto State Armory KS-47 first shots
A few weeks ago, I was gifted a Palmetto State Armory KS-47. If you are unfamiliar with the KS-47, it is the results of an AR and an AK drinking too much vodka, and 9 months later this pops out:
It has some of the best of the AK- the caliber and magazines
Some of the worst of the AK- the mag release and no bolt-hold-open
Some of the best of the AR- the ergonomics, modularity, and trigger
And some of the worst of the AR- the direct impingement gas system
Which makes it a true weird gun, and absolutely deserving a space in my collection!
I had the old Weaver 1x scope laying about, and figured it was time to just see what this could do. So, I scrounged up a bunch of different ammo, grabbed a MagPull 20 rounder and went to the range!
The 20 rounder had some mixed bag ammo already in it, so I ran the target out to 50 yards and got some rough adjustments in to start testing: Not sure any 2 in there are alike.
I got it dialed in at 50, and started testing to see what might be a “final load” for this gun when I put a better optic on it. PPU 123GR softpoint. Not as good as I hoped.
Winchester 123GR SP. shows promise. Not sure I didn’t pull that flyer.
My hand loads that are dialed in to the CZ-527 Carbine. This is probably the way I will go since it will make logistics a lot easier to have one hunting load
Tula123 grain FMJ. Not bad for crap ammo!
Monarch 123GR HP. Pretty poor performance, but it is a pretty round with black case and silver bullet!
But here is the weird thing I have never really experienced with any other gun I have tested multiple different ammo in. They were all hitting the same point of aim!
Now, this was all at 50 yards with a 1x “no magnification” scope. But it is interesting enough that I am really wanting to get a better optic on this gun and stretch it out to 100 yards and beyond. Hell, this may be the gun I put a thermal on and get back to killing pigs on the ranch.

Cool! Free is good.

Yep, free is good. How dirty was the gun with that ammo selection? Any ammo related misfires?

It’s just wrong. Not like your sister caught in the dryer wrong, but maybe your cousin at a family reunion wrong.

Depends on what state you’re in.

I had a buddy wanting to sell me an AK for a decent price (new in box). But, I wasn’t willing to pay to feed her.

No malfunctions at all. Everything went bang and functioned 100%. It did not seem to be too dirty, but I’ll tear it down tomorrow and see

Yeah, the 7.62x39 lost its giggle-factor when it stopped being almost-as-cheap-as-22LR. But it’s still a great medium distance round.

Throw the word "step" before either of those two and I'm all in.DanielChamberlain wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 11:50 pmWait... there's something wrong with a cousin at a family reunion?

Re: Palmetto State Armory KS-47 first shots
Last week, Primary Arms had a hell of a deal on the “SLX Hunter” scopes. They were listing all of the models for $99!
So, I grabbed a 3-9x50 and slapped it on top of this abomination and finally made it to the range today. I had the same mixed bag of ammo, so I got it rough boresighted and went to work That same Tula Ammo made a true MOA group at 100 yards. First shots. I was VERY impressed with that, and I wish it was not an FMJ that was giving that performance!
Monarch gave the same lackluster group… but was again hitting the same POA
I adjusted the scope for this group and was pretty impressed with the group from a makeshift rest. Too bad I have not seen this Winchester ammo for sale in years. It might make the cut to be this gun’s hunting ammo
The S&B stuff was not as good as I hoped. The horizontal stinging MIGHT have been me… but the shots all “felt” good.
My hand loads for the CZ Carbine did not impress this time. I need to load more and really wring it out. From this one group, I was not impressed.
BUT… and you can probably tell from the pics… the shots were all hitting the same POA again! I put a new tape spot on the target, ran it to 75 yards, they threw 10 mixed rounds in a magazine and shot them rapid fire. They all hit in the same fist sized group. (Unfortunately the pic did not save on my phone for some reason)
Overall, I am impressed with this gun. PSA really hit it out of the park with this one.

You gonna hunt with it?

Dead deer out to 100 with those groups, I should scope my better AK and see what the target says.
