Off Road, Hunting and Trail Apps

Post by Wambli Ska »

I want to get a subscription to a few of the apps above. It’ll really cut down on the time I’d waste on trial and error trips. I see dirt roads and trails everywhere but I don’t know if they are private, condition and above all where they lead and whether my stock (for now) Gladiator and I can handle them.

So far it seems like onX is the leader on all of the above and I seem to remember six-gun recommending their hunting app which actually settled a boundary discussion with a rancher on one of his hunts.

But before I press the trigger I was wondering is anyone here has had any experience with them or other apps they can recommend. Gotta get the Jeep off road as soon as possible, hopefully next week!!! 😎

OnX is the absolute no question, best one I have found. I have only used the hunting app but have heard the off-road one is just as amazing and works just as well. I’ve even used it to track down a land owner I wanted to buy something from 🤷🏻‍♂️

OnX is the one you want, I think JBOhio asked a Wildlife Officer in Colorado how accurate the app was and they said if it says you are on public land, you are.

Damn!!!! Sounds like I don’t have to go to far off the mark then. I only wish they would offer a bundle for all the subscriptions. I’d get all three. Cool!!!!!

Yep. OnX

Has a rangefinder built in. And it’s accurate.

Seems pretty unanimous so far! Facebook G&A folks agree too.

Been using On-X for a few years hunting public land, love it. When I get back into off roading I'll buy that version too.

I use the free version, because I don’t need the extra features. I’m more or less marking waypoints. And, can save a hunt like below. I was at the X, made the shot toward the bottom right, the blue line is where I tracked it.

Would have been nice a few years ago when I got lost squirrel hunting in a big state park and my phone compass crapped out. To make it worse my blood sugar started getting low and that's when panic set in. Complete luck brought me to what looked like an ancient trail marker completely overgrown and half rotted but I was able to make out enough to figure where my truck was. I'm not a hunter.

Yeah I’m sure the pucker factor was high under those circumstances. I’ve been lucky and have never gotten lost in the woods, except for one time. I was using a first generation GPS and those things just sucked. And for once in my life I was paying more attention to a device than where I was. But I knew that if I walked straight west long enough I’d hit a road so I did that and came out about 1/4 Mike away from my truck. Sold the stupid thing immediately. But the new services and devices are amazing!!!

I heard a cool story about being somewhat "misplaced" and just leaning back in your saddle and letting your horse meander back to the ranch.. ;)

I wasn’t lost. My horse was. I just gave him time to work it out. Alcohol MIGHT have been involved. My horse had a drinking problem 😁

So update, Jeep ownership includes a bunch of perks including, as I just found out, offers on OnX apps. So I now have yearly subscriptions to all 3 apps.

For those of you that use the apps, they have online seminars for advanced use etc. there’s one coming up for the off-road app. Just signed up 👍👍👍

I too have never been lost , I always knew what state or province I was in. I learned to use a compass and topo map and sometimes a hand held altimeter long before GPS , I did buy a Garman GPS 48 back in the 90s it was worthless. Other than boats I never bought another. Back then a Loran-C might have been nice. One of the most valuable items when hunting ,jeeping etc. in new areas was county plat maps, they always kept me legal.
