CZ Shadow 2 range report

Post by Kansashunter »

I had tried it out a couple of weeks ago but it failed to go into battery almost every time. I was shooting reloads but they had ran fine in the xdm but I wanted to try a couple of things before I got too excited. Tonight my son was here and we had a little time so I took it apart, I did this before the first time also, and I lubed the slide more. It still wouldn't work. I tried some magtec ammo and it worked sometimes. Then went to some fiocho ammo and it ran fine. Went back to the magtec and it ran fine. Tried the reloads and it worked better. I guess it needs to break in. The good part is it is nice in the hand and recoil is tame. It shoots a nice group but a couple of inches low, I have not adjusted it yet. It would make me a little nervous if it was an edc but it is just a range toy for me. I think I am going to like it as long as it will break in and shoot my reloads.

$5 fine hey. Sounds like it is breaking in, more range time, win win

Sounds like you need to shoot it like you stole it to break it in. You have yourself one fine pistol.

Maybe it is the mags that need the break in.

Those ain’t sloppy guns, so maybe it needs a little break in. But, I’d also not hesitate to reach out to CZ.

I know of instances with CZ pistols from some range folks. Their symptoms were the bolt almost goes to battery but won’t close the last 1/16 in. Have to keep the chamber pristine clean there is very tight depth clearance with the shadow models.
Don’t know if that’s the exact symptom you are experiencing?
The reload cases may be a few 1/1000s long? Might check the ammo case length that runs well against that does not.

That is what it is doing but more like a quarter inch. I can hit it with the heel of my hand and it will go into battery and fire. I suppose it is possible that the cases are on the long side but another thing that shocked me was I am almost out of 9mm reloads. I thought I had quite a few but when I went to get some there was only 300 rounds left. When I go to reload next time I will look at case length closer but I am sure I checked them before. I have a few boxes of factory ammo and I am going to try some more of it and if any of it doesn't work I will measure it. If it continues a conversation with cz will be next.

Might not be the length so much as the diameter at the base. Not all sizing dies resize right down to the rim. You might consider a small base die to solve this problem.https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precision-Re ... B00MO4SKE8

I had a similar problem with my Springfield 1911 9mm
Springfield was terrific they sent me a shipping label
They reamed the chamber, polished the ramp, milled the barrel link and a few more tweaks there were 7 items total that were machined. Runs perfectly now and holds under 2in at 25 yds with factory ammo at 25yds.

The earlier comment about fully resizing brass may be something to check but if you have intermittent fail to battery with new factory ammo it’s more likely it needs the chamber reamed. A friend I shoot with regularly has a CZ shadow not sure of the exact model? Has blue grips had chamber reamed / polished at a local smith for a similar problem he did not buy it new. It is very accurate and runs great now.
Hope you have similar experience with CZ I had with Springfield.

Another thought
If the stoppage is a 1/4 in out with both new factory and reloads it’s not likely a brass resizing issue or case length issue.
If you remove the barrel hold it vertically you should be able to drop a round in the chamber. It should go all the way to the rim. This is the plunk test. Remove the round using a pencil in the muzzle if it sticks.
If the round doesn’t go all the way in or sticks the chamber may need work. Try different rounds maybe a dozen or so new factory then try some reloads.

I have the P-01 and a similar Canik that closely resembles the P-01. Both have fired numerous loads, including reloads, 115 gr, 124 gr and hollow points. Never a failure.

I will have to try that bullet drop test. Before I shoot it again it is going to have to cool off.

Those in the bullet casting community with CZ's frequently comment on tight chamber throats, and some bullet profiles snagging on them. Also: spec for a loaded 9mm round is a diameter of .380" at the case mouth.

The plunk test will tell you that there's a problem with one or the other, but it's an issue with either seating depth or taper crimp.
