Scope upgrade?
Scope upgrade?
I've got a REM 40-x chambered in 7mm REM Mag. Scope is an older Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20. 1" tube of course.
The rifle shoots great, but I don't hunt much anymore and I'm thinking my purpose for the rifle will now be range use out to 600 yards (current range limitation).
So I'm thinking about upgrading the scope to something with exposed turrets, larger objective, more suitable reticle for stated purpose, etc.
Thoughts on potential new glass around $1k or less?
Or should I leave it in more classic form and use other rifles I already have for range toys?

Re: Scope upgrade?
7 Mag is not really a high volume range cartridge. For various reasons. But, you rifle, your rules. Do as you wish.
For your price range, I’ve been pleased with Vortex options. Several to choose from with varying features. Great warranty. Decent glass for your range, reticles, turrets. Just find the one that suits you best.

Yeah, good point about the barrel wear.

Blast/throat erosion/recoil/cost/etc

But, nothing says you can’t go out, nail some steel at 600 yards a few times, giggle, and come back another day to do it a few more times.

I'll second the Vortex. For what I can afford they are great. Don't go Burris. They suck!

Re: Scope upgrade?
To me you already have all the optics you need for the limited shooting you may do.
Spend that chunk of change elsewhere.

Re: Scope upgrade?
I have a Leupold Mark 3 HD 3-9x40 with a simple mil dot reticle on my light LR hunter rig Remington 700 in 7-08. It’s a high quality, super simple setup that does not require a computer and ballistic engineering degree to run. Elevation turret is external adjustment with 0.1 mil clicks, and for a 7mm RemMag to 600 yards it would be a good, simple, rugged setup. MSRP is $499 and has Leupold great glass and unquestioned lifetime warranty.

Re: Scope upgrade?
Now that would be plenty for ringing steel and giggling. If more precision is needed they do have higher magnification scopes with side focus adjustment turrets in that same series.

Nothing wrong with the scope you have for what you're intending to do. Nothing wrong with a fine duplex if you know the range. See what Leupold will charge you to add turrets.
If you're falling short on elevation, get some slanted, long range bases.
Zee does have a point - 600 yards is kind of a short putt for a target-built 7 Mag with high BC bullets. That game can be played with less cartridge and more barrel life.

Re: Scope upgrade?
I seem to recall Linefinder doing a ton of LR work with the arguably lower tier Vari-X II back a few forum iterations ago. If I were in your situation, I would spend that money on ammo or reloading components instead of a different optic.
A Kenton Industries custom turret might be just the ticket if you're looking to dial your elevation. https://kentonindustries.com/products/l ... et-turrets

Hadn't thought about adding turrets. That's my biggest issue to solve - nothing wrong with the glass.
Thanks!
