A couple of MDs I know sort of disagree with that. When I worked corrections, they wanted to see a 12 lead EKG of any inmate that got tazed because, as they put it, "that person, for all intents and purposes, just got electrocuted." Most of the EKGs I did never showed anything. However, having been cardioverted twice myself, I can understand their concern.
Plus the joy of removing the probes. I seemed to get stuck with that job frequently. Inmate was already in a pissed off enough mood to get tazed, and then I got to go in and rip 2 barbed probes out. Fun times </sarcasm =off>

The new Taser 10 is pretty cool - longer range; somewhat longer, more effective probes; up to ten darts to fire and target individually. In theory you can have two darts each in as many as three people and have them all twitching simultaneously (which brings up complex legal questions if one surrenders and the other needs another zap); or four darts in one person and the onboard microchips will pick the two best contacts to use as their connection. . .Pretty advanced stuff.
Of course, it's LE only at this point, and while "Taser 10" might refer to the number of shots, it might also refer to the fact that it costs about TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. And therein lies a lot of the difference: LE is trying to de-escalate, contain, bring to a non-lethal resolution, yadda, yadda, yadda. . .but the catch is that less lethal is often deployed with lethal cover standing by. In short, yes, there's a guy moving in with a Taser, but his buddy has a shotgun full of buckshot at the ready if the Taser doesn't work. Civilian self defense doesn't typically present that kind of logistical advantage.
Death from a bullet. . .death from respiratory distress from pepper spray. . . death from electrical trauma from a Taser, or because they cracked their head unable to control their fall, or it lit their hand sanitizer on fire. . .death from a pepperball penetrating into the eye socket. . .death from a poorly aimed beanbag round penetrating between two ribs. . .It can ALL go badly - it comes down to having to articulate that you deployed whatever you deployed because the other guy was in the wrong.

Just for clarity, I was making a comparison between Taser and pepper spray. After someone gets sprayed, it burns for a long time. And even reactivates when you take a shower later that day.
Didn’t mean that Taser can’t have some side effects. Just that, once the lightning stops, it’s done.
I personally watched a guy die after being pepper sprayed. Not immediately after being sprayed. The pepper spray didn’t kill him. It was a massive heart attack. And, as the subsequent autopsy showed, the guy had copious amounts of alcohol and cocaine in his system. Maybe the pepper spray played a part in the cocktail of stupidness that ended the guys life. We’ll never know. But there are ignorant people out there who would blame the pepper spray.

A few years back when we had attempted riots in Phoenix. I had an acquaintance built a baton from a modified livestock prod. I watched it burn holes in corrugated cardboard. Id rather just carry.
