Shot my first Enfield today

Post by JunkCollector »

Recoil was quite manageable
Sights Dialed in easily
Some history to this one I'd think.
Really looking forward to the kids trying it and learning about it.

Dang that's nice! I have never even seen a .22 Enfield let alone fire one. Shot and owned several .303 brit versions and they are a fun rifle.

IIRC This is only the second one I've seen.
The first was about a grand so way to rich for me.
This was about 1/3 of that so I decided to play.

Guess that's what happens when you wash a "dry clean only" rifle

That is interesting! Did they modify the Mag or is it single shot?

This one is a single shot.
The mag is just a catcher for the fired rounds.
One later variation did have a functional magazine

That's a neat one!

Probably a pre-1916 action by the fact it's got a rear long range volley sight still attached and a plugged hole up front where the front half of that system would have been. The Brits decided that even .303 didn't need a 2800 yard capability - I guess on a .22 it would have been a bit superfluous.

When Kenfu1911 and I worked together at the LGS in the 1990's, we had a batch of Australian Lithgow No. 2 .22's come through in basically new condition. I think the "civilians" paid $200 for them - I'm sure Kenny paid less. Wasn't my thing at the time - wish I had one now.

It does appear to be made from an early long tom.

I'm not a milsurp guy but apparently picked up two that could have seen service in WWI
Received the dies for the 43 Mauser yesterday
Brass and bullets should be here Monday
The brass I got quite lucky on.
There was a small deposit of unobtanium out in Washington

Yeah, OK, that would make sense. The Brits wouldn't deliberately divert a Mk. III action to a rimfire trainer which would have no need of a stripper clip bridge, and they would have had plenty of obsolete/obsolescent Long Lee-Metfords to convert even before you consider the possibility of rotted out barrels.

The Lithgow No.2 .22's I mentioned in my last post were outwardly WWII spec No.1 MKIII*'s with no spring or follower in the mag. Yours is considerably more well-traveled.

Just search "SMLE" on G.B. Seems to be a decent number of the .22's in circulation.
