Horizon movie
Took the family to see it yesterday and it’s a winner. You do have to go in already thinking this is chapter 1 so there will be no closing of story lines etc. It’s about 3 hours of characters and storyline(s) introductions and then some fast previews of what’s coming. The good news is they managed to do it without boring the hell out of the viewer.
The acting was great and it’s a stellar cast. I’m a stickler for gear and period correctness and it did not disappoint. For western gun nuts like me you’ll see a ton of cool guns and leather. Lots of period correct clothing, horse tack and traps. The mistakes were small and in many cases inevitable because it’s really difficult to reproduce period gear at the scale needed for a movie like this one so every once in a while you’ll see a holster that doesn’t belong or such. But most folks won’t notice.
Kevin Costner does not have a lot of range as an actor, but what he knows how to do he does well. And he’s a hell of a director. The cinematography is outstanding and clearly conveys the vastness of the West.
All in all you won’t be disappointed or bored. Highly recommend it!

Will be interesting to see if he can finish it (four movies, two in the can now and third starting). Poor numbers so far and there's likely only so much of his own funding he's willing to sink.

Re: Horizon movie
I think just about every movie nowadays is getting poor numbers on Theatrical returns. Wife and I actually like going to the movies so we see a lot of films on opening day. Can’t remember the last time I was at a “full house”, actually at times we’ll be the only ones in the theater. Frankly I don’t know how theaters make money anymore. And convincing people to go to 1 movie and then wait for 3 more is a tall order except for pure fans of the genre like my family.
Anyway, his money will be coming from releasing to streaming services down the line. A 4 part Western at the level of Lonesome Dove with the cast he assembled and the high production value will play for decades to come. He knows it and his backers do to. I think the BS that he mortgaged his house to make the film is just PR lies to gain attraction. There’s no bank or production company on earth that wouldn’t fund a project with Costner after Yellowstone.

Went to see it yesterday....good movie...worth watching...It ain't an epic like Lonesome Dove, but it will do...I did notice that the firearms were all right for the period...
The 1874 Sharps...The gun that made the west safe for Winchester

Re: Horizon movie
Glad you enjoyed it! I know you'd be one of the guys that would "get it".
They just announced that they are delaying part 2 to let part one go to streaming first. It'll be on MAX streaming service. Once they feel there is more exposure to people they will release two. Disappointing but not exactly unexpected and I will watch it again on Max before I go see two. I feel you catch a lot more details with every watching of some movies. I do believe that once more folks have access to it they will want to see what's next. And so we are clear I'm not defending his release strategy, was never really sure of how the whole part 1 at the theaters would do as a marketing strategy. But hey, he can be bold with his projects and money. He's been written off by critics on many movies that are still cult classics.

Say what you want about waterworld, but the quad-.50 scene makes me stop and watch every time
