REALLY...????

Post by GrapeApe »

Saw this Sightmark RMS-C footprint red dot as a Daily deal @ Palmetto State Armory.
https://palmettostatearmory.com/sightma ... black.html
Was interested enough to do a little research on it.

On one of the sites, I found this is the "From the manufacturer" section...
https://www.amazon.com/Sightmark-Mini-S ... WLY16?th=1
(Scroll down to accessories)
The Mini provides up to 100,000 hours of battery life on a single CR2032 and the battery is able to be changed without taking the unit off of the firearm. In high-pressure situations where seconds count, that could make all the difference.
That REALLY sounds like they're talking about changing the sight's battery in the middle of a "situation"

How many of you had added a CR2032 battery and the tools to replace the sight's battery to your EDC kit? I haven't.

My "wasteful" solution is that I replace any batteries around the first of every year. That's the 2 under the left grip on my 1911 Hogue laser grips,(Doesn't effect the laser in the right grip panel) and the one in my only SRO pistol.(Also doesn't require removal of the sight)
I stretch it out a little longer for the ones in my scopes that only illuminate a red dot in an existing reticle. With them, I can still see the reticle IF the battery fails

That’s what happens when your marketing people have ZERO clue/knowledge of what your talking about and the company management does not check copy before publishing.

I can tell you from internal insight that PSA was once a shooters run company and is now big enough that it’s run by lawyers and accountants just like Midway. It an unfortunate but almost inevitable by-product of success.

Hmmmm. . .

Should we come up with an IPSC stage that requires you to change the battery on your red dot under time?

All I can say is that the guys with the RMR's would be SCREWED!

I cant remember which red dot has the battery under a screw lid on the top of it but it's near impossible to get it screwed back on without stripping the thread. Then another has the battery underneath. I like how the Holosun has the little slide out in the side for the battery. Either one you sure as hell ain't swapping a battery while being fired upon and ducking behind cover 🤣

That’s why carry guns should run top quality irons only
But we’ve discussed that topic before.

So. . .just for the amusement value of the thread. . .

I guess the only saving virtue I've found in the Leupold Delta Point is that it DOES allow for probably the fastest, most "no tools" battery change of anything currently out there. It burns through batteries at a pretty ridiculous rate. It's got a stupid tall deck, requiring stupid tall backup sights. It has the most awkward, non-intuitive brightness adjustment system on the planet that also requires you to stick your finger inside to block your view of the dot while adjusting it's brightness. . . But yeah, you can change the battery quickly.

Trijicon RMR: Remove sight completely to change batteries, then re-Loctite, re-mount, re-cure the Loctite for a day, and re-zero? What format would you like the memo stating "EFF THAT!" in?

Trijicon SRO and RMR HD: I'm pretty sure it's these that JSD is talking about. The battery caps have stupid fine threads that are VERY hard to align. The HD's cap is also about 30% underneath the overhang of the sight's window. This makes it so hard to get in with common tools to loosen or tighten the cap that Trijicon now includes a special dog-legged doo-dad to perform the task. Also on my "EFF THAT!" memo.

But at least Trijicons allow you to adjust W&E with the rim of a 9mm or 5.56 cartridge. Maybe not as good as a Tactical Battery Change, but still nice.

Aimpoint ACRO: Same kind of battery cap as the Trijicons, but they seem to be using coarser threads that are easier to align. YAY! But you need a Torx #10 bit to adjust your W&E. BOO!

Holosuns: you need the same ridiculously tiny screwdriver to either get the battery tray out or adjust W&E, but at least it's a slot head not too hard to improvise. Word to the wise: put some kind of gooey threadlocker like VC-3 on your battery tray screw. We've had a few of them come loose and fall out when shooting. The newer ones seem to have some kind of ratchet lock thing going on - time will tell on that.

Maybe these are petty, nit-picky points, but you can detail-strip a bomb-proof pistol from 1911 with nothing but it's own parts for tools, and another from 1982 with nothing but a non-specialized 5/32" punch, and we regard John Browning and Gaston Glock as demi-gods for it. Nothing wrong with wanting more of this equipment on THAT program.

Removing a sight to swap batteries is dumb.
Needing to re-zero after doing such is also dumb.

One can be overcome by not being a dumb engineer, people have been making water tight compartment since forever, no need to put the battery in the upside down.

The re-zeroing thing could be fixed, however, it IS a monumental task for manufacturing. Jackasses with CNC tools in their garage can mill the slide so there no shift. Of course milling each slide to perfect fit isn’t a realistic option.
And then of course “we” would need to settle on one footprint. Which won’t happen.

Needing a tool to swap batteries isn’t a deal breaker, if you NEED to change the battery in a bad situation either
A: you’re a tool who didn’t change them on a schedule.
B: it just ain’t your day, and your angry pixie storage device just up and died. Use you irons.

Just use your money to get more ammo instead of wasting it on a red dot...

I was one that looked down on handgun optics. poop a friend's and I smiled. A while back, i picked up a Kel Tec .22 that came with one and after a few bixes of ammo I smiled even more. I'm now preparing to pick up a Holosun and sending it and my P365 to our resident gunsmith for mill work and install. Yup I looked down but now I'm all for them because they make me shoot beyond 7 yards MUCH better.

My wife just passed her qualifier, no, she BLEW AWAY her qualifier for the NV CCW class shooting my Glock 48 MOS with a Holosun EPS Carry, a gun she has NEVER shot before and landed every shot on the 10 ring. I told her to just lay the dot on the target and press the trigger. Her smile was precious 😎

Side note, those kel tecs are stupid good guns. Got one for my oldest.
