couple of insane guns announced at the NRAAM

Post by Admin »

It seems both Henry and Rossi announced "pistol" versions of their .30-30 and .45-70 Lever actions.

As someone who loves weird guns, I am strangely excited by both of these:

Henry 'Bear's Leg':

Rossi "Triple Black"

Which is also offered in .454 Casull, because 'hell, yeah!'

Awkward to shoot as both rifle AND pistol, and REALLY awkward to cycle without the anchoring point of the buttplate at the shoulder! That's gotta be almost as fun to operate as a California-legal AR-15! Sign me up!

If Liberace, Elton John, and Jim Nabors (allegedlys) were in a rowboat full of rubber dongs singing show tunes, it wouldn’t be more gay than this gun.

The “weird” factor is high for sure. Not sure, outside of “giggles” what I’d use one for.

What if you add Freddy Mercury and Siegfried and Roy?

Still doesn’t hold a candle in the wind to these pistol things.

Speaking of insane.... can we talk about how wrong a carbon fiber wrapped barrel is on a lever gun?

I actually kind of dig the "Mares leg" style guns.

They need "Riflemen sized" huge loops so you can spin them around to load, like C. Connors did in "The Rifleman" AND buyers should be required to show proficiency in that move before purchase

Can we talk about how wrong you are?!?

That’s pretty badass! 6.7 pound (bare) 45-70? Yep. That’s pushing custom bolt gun (which I’d prefer over a lever) money but I’d 100% own that if I had cash laying around with no hookers or blow to spend it on.

I could see the appeal of the mares leg in a pistol caliber for farting around, but 45-70? Yeah no.

Actually. . .part of the challenge of accurizing a lever action is in deadening or making the harmonics between the barrel and mag tube more uniform. My Dad's done this on a few of his levers with a bead of RTV gasket goo between the barrel and magazine - a carbon fiber wrap to stiffen the barrel might help the overall process.

And lighter. The lever gun is traditionally an all-steel affair with the need to hang a mag tube at least partially dictating barrel diameter. I'm actually a little surprised no one has looked at doing a lever with something like an M4 carbine barrel profile with its various steps to reduce weight, accommodate a grenade launcher, not bend when you bayonet fight with it, and still take a standard gas block. Thick and the receiver and the sight and mag tube hanger locations, but skinny everywhere else.

And another point on the whole mare's leg thing: have you looked at what factory .45-70 ammo COSTS? That's a lot of money to burn through a gun you can't hit anything with.

Although I'm am admittedly a traditionalist, the carbon fiber Henry I could almost see owning. The mares leg, I've got some 45-70 loads I'd love to see someone shoot from one

Watched the video on that and the Bear’s Leg and the whole point behind the CF barrel and aluminum fore end was to make it handle normally”with a suppressor mounted.

And the point of the Bear’s Leg is to make it easy to turn into an SBR. File the form 4, then buy the full buttstock. It makes sense in a way
To make something simple is a thousand times more difficult than to make something complex.

Depends on barrel length, I suppose.

If it’s 14”, solid meh. You're playing sin tax at a rate of $100 per inch of gain.

Shorties are fun, but there’s a line/point of optimization one crosses when pondering them.
