Oppenheimer was amazing!!!

Post by Wambli Ska »

Probably one of the best films I’ve ever watched. Incredibly well acted by an amazing cast who delivers everything I hoped for and more. And the ending blew me away.

HIGHLY recommend!!! 👍👍👍

Hmmm we thought it was good, very good acting, but wasn't as spectacular as expected.
Loved how the table turned for the hearing.

I’m a bit of a history buff so to me it looked like history “live”. Basically the behind the scenes look at a development that changed the world’s landscape forever…

We loved it too - but came away from it more than just a bit pissed off. Because - its happening AGAIN (Kangaroo courts, etc, etc, etc.)!

I will say I should have had a smaller sized drink. I was squirming like a 5 year old by the end. But I don’t know what I would have cut off the film.

I think they went a little overboard with Oppenheimer's "head noise", but I'm glad they didn't go all revisionist history with the issues behind the use of the bomb.

Also liked how they covered the "Communism-Curious" attitude that was common among many in that period. When you're coming fresh out of an era of oil, steel, and rail barons and industrial revolution child labor, Marx might look appealing. . .until the stories of purges come out.

August 9 (yesterday) was the 78th anniversary of Nagasaki bombing. Hiroshima was 4 days prior I think

According to BigAl, Hiroshima was the 6th

I thought the movie was great. And, I know at three hours… you really can’t make the movie longer, but it would have been great if they discussed the real reason Truman wanted to drop the bomb and why he wanted the news for Potsdam.

There’s a lot that happened between 1918 and 1965, in foreign policy and world view that we either gloss over or tell a half truth with in public education. You can draw a line from everything we are having issues with today, to a foreign policy decision made during that 38 year period…

This is true, and as a society we have mastered the art of ignoring, deleting or outright denying history as a source of knowledge. Most are happy to cruise through life clueless of how we got here. That’s why I’m hopeful that movies like Oppenheimer, while not documentaries, will spark an interest in some to do some more studying of the past, for lack of a better way of expressing this.

One thing that has struck me about our military's evolution. Imagine a country that would drop a couple of bombs and incinerate a few hundred thousand civilians, 75 years later would prosecute one of their own soldiers for killing a civilian killing bomb maker...

That’s not a true statement.

While we have more stringent RoE than cops, no one has been prosecuted for adjudicating a target.

Some light reading on how the history of that event and aftermath is seen..

In reference to my earlier comment, we often can’t stand the look in the mirror and acknowledge the complete history and context of an event. We would rather only have the view that makes us feel good about ourselves.

A soldier was prosecuted for killing an unarmed bomb-maker.

What was his name?

I guarantee there is a side of the story not being told.. just like that idiot LT Lorance who gunned down a dude on a bike, with zero indication he was an insurgent.
