First set of test loads 45-60

Going for safety, smooth cycling and potential accuracy. Will fine tune later.
First set of test loads.
Benchmark load is the load Big Al gave me which work very well in this gun. Itโs a 300gr LFP on top of 33 gr of 4198. Very mild and a pleasure to shoot
Black tip is 37 gra of AA2230, blue is 38gr and red is 49gr. According to GraoeApeโs QuickLoad software I should still be well under the 28,000 psi the action is rated for and at 39 gr I should be closing in on 1,500fps and still under 22,000 psi.
So one last check, anyone see something wrong with the approach?
The Heeler is obviously thrilled for the trip in the Jeep

Interesting enough all my loads exceed the OAL of 2.15โ of the original 45-60 specs, and yet, they all cycle through the Uberti flawlessly even when ejecting unfired ammo.

Side question. Does anyone here have the Lyman 49th edition book? Apparently it has a good article on the 1876 with reloading info.

Thinking you meant to type 39 for the red tips?

Actually "early morning" too, the phone call went past 2400hrs.
And I HATE phones automatically flipping pictures, if it wasn't for the watch pocket and no safety being visible, it looks like your packing lefty.
I'll be curious to see how the QL calculated data compares to real world. Though with the longer COAL, I'm betting velocity and pressure are going to be lower than predicted

I do miss my RZ10. It was a beautiful gun that shot smooth and grouped consistently. I just shoot 1911s low and ended up selling it. I let other try it out at the range quite often when I had it out and if I had changed the sights for me it would have been shooting way too high for just about everyone else that ever shot it.
Looking forward to range results with the .45-60.

Not the phone flipping, I shot the picture from a mirror reflection. And thanks SO MUCH for forgiving me for forgetting the time difference

Did you ever catch your intruder?
Anyway, no chronograph today since I was just testing function and โpotentialโ. And I MIGHT have found my load first try
It was cold and windy so I had no desire to linger but shooting grounds is a short drive away so no excuse not to get this done.
Set up some cans about 25 or so yards away so I could have something to aim at. Started with Alโs load as my benchmark and it worked as well as it has all along. A pleasure to shoot, mild and accurate.
Moved to the first load on of 37gr of AA2230. Felt considerably stouter that my benchmark but still very pleasant to shoot. Shooting at the cans showed good potential accuracy. So far so good

Got to the middle test load of 38 grains and feeling a little more confidence I spotted a 5 gal bucket at about 100 plus yards.

Put the front sight on it and the 3 shoots I sent down range โQuigleydโ the bucket into the air

Amazing! Dead on with the factory sight setting and definitely stouter than 37 but still a very comfortable load to shoot!
Moved to 39 gr and something interesting happened. Somewhat stouter than 38 BUT I got soot down the side of the case. Soooooo I think Iโm stopping at 38. Normally soot means the case is not adequately sealing the chamber so Iโm not in the danger zone.
But if the middle load chronographs at the expected 1400 or so or even over Iโm close enough to my goal and Iโll just fine tune and go from there. A 350gr plated slug at that velocity is as good of a short range thumper hunting load as Iโll ever need

You just have to love it when the first loads do as desired. Saves a lot of time and frustration.

It certainly does. Just loaded 10 rounds to shoot some groups but Iโm expecting this to be my new standard hunting load for this gun.

If you can find any, the Hornady 350gr Jacketed round nose flat point has shot exceptionally well out of my Marlin Cowboy 45-70 and would probably be my go to if I ever actually hunt with that rifle.

Damned handy program. Wish theyโd do an Apple version.
Iโm keeping this one in Crossfire Trail movie configuration. Save those for the โ86 thatโs in my future
