Garmin Xero C1 Pro Chronograph

Has anybody here had a chance to play with this new Garmin chronograph, or know anybody who has? If it is as good as the article says it is, when you consider the size and user friendliness that it claims, it may actually be a big leap in chronograph performance and tech.

Maybe not worth the price for someone who only occasionally needs a chrono, but it could be promising for a frequent reloader, competitive shooter, etc. Based on my experience using Garmin's aviation and outdoor products, they don't have many misses.

I've been reading about it on other forums. I've been using a Magnetospeed V3 for many years during load development. I've not bothered to get a Labradar because I don't need such an expensive device for the amount that would need it. Plus it's big and finicky. The Xero interests me quite a bit and it's simpler than the V3. I plan on getting one when they become available in November December.

It has my interest. To be able to get velocity readings without having to burn extra rounds would be nice. I cant use the Magnetospeed and shoot for groups/sight in at the same time.

I am interested, because the majority of my shooting is at an indoor range, where I CANT put anything in front of the bench to get velocity on a traditional chrono. This may work for that

I think on of these is in my future. Wonder how it works (or doesn't) when someone is shooting next to you? Suppose you can discard any errant readings pretty easily.

I'm using the Magnetospeed now. It's an improvement over the old school "shoot over it, not into it" chronos but still a pain to mount it on the barrel.

Tangent - I bet this Garmin device shares tech with their golf launch monitors.

Number one reason I thought the MS was a dumb idea.
But, I have the luxury of being able to set up a chronograph. Or do wtf I want because I shoot on private land.

If I was gonna spend lab radar money on one, I’d buy the garmin because it’s so small.

I mostly shoot at public ranges or at a club my dad is a member of. Setting up a traditional chronograph is not an option at the public range unless I want it about 30' in front of me assuming they would even let me set it up. I went with the Magnetospeed for that reason as the Lab Radar was a lot more money and hit and miss availability.

Same boat but its "5-8 weeks". It will be nice if I no longer have to load extra rounds for chronograph use. It gets a little rough with the little .458. If I dont factor in brass cost its still around $1.20 per shoulder punch. The bigger issue than cost though is the limited resupply options for primers. I think I have a lifetime supply of Speer 350gr bullets now and at least enough powder for a while. Brass isnt a huge issue other than I have to make a new batch since I now have 100 pieces of .300WM brass of the same lot. Im down to about 30 pieces of my last batch of brass and I think its time to start fresh. That being said, the little .458 isnt the only thing I shoot or am working up loads for.

Don't make fun of me just yet, but this thing works great, even on my airguns pushing 1600fps. And I've verified it's accuracy with a magnetospeed and the rcbs shoot through that someone here was kind enough to donate to me.

Mine showed up the other week. I have not had a chance to get it to a range though. It picks up BBs and pellets in the basement, but I have not had a chance to verify the accuracy. It is a small unit and will hopefully work well at the range.

A friend of mine tried his out last week. He loved it. He said you just set it on the bench and start shooting. Transfers all the data to his phone when finished. Purdy much stated that the Magnetospeed v3 that he has won't be used much any more.

From the manual (yes, I'm actually reading it...):

When you start a session, the chronograph automatically checks for interference from other radars. If the chronograph detects interference from other radar systems, it switches to a clean channel automatically.

Cool! Just unboxed after FedEx screwed around with the package for a week.

It looks like LabRadar and Caldwell have introduced competitors (maybe already in the works) but I wonder if it was too little, too late. Like I said originally, in my experience using Garmin products tailored for the outdoors and aviation I have found that they have very few misses. If I needed a chronograph today, I would likely buy the Garmin unit.

Just looking at the other offering after handling my Garmin (haven't used it yet), I do like what appears to be larger buttons on the Caldwell. Color screen that is also larger is a plus.

That said, I hope the Garmin app proves to be useful and limit any interaction with the actual unit other than turning it on. We'll see...

Did a quick range trip today and had a chance to compare numbers between the Garmin and Magnetospeed. This was checked with a stainless steel R700 6.5 CM with a 22" barrel. This was factory 129gr American Whitetail ammunition. For some reason the Garmin missed the second shot, but that was the only shot of the day it missed.

Its close enough that Im not going to worry about the difference between them.

Set up was easy at the range. I set it on the bench and pointed it at the target. It looks like there is an aiming line on the top, but I just eyeballed it. Im happy with it so far and I dont have to load up extra rounds just for chronographing anymore.

Now that I've used mine, I do wish all of the on device controls were available in the app. Also, would like to have a quicker way to start a new string.

They 100% should be. Seems odd they are not.
Email them. Maybe they would add that in an update.
