Ramshot Reloading Rifle Powder.

Post by T'owd Mon »

Anyone with experience with this powder? I know it's made in Belgium but I do believe that it is available in the U.S. I see that it is a 'Ball Powder' and as far as I know; from using BLC-2, ball powders seem to need a magnum primer for best results. Is this the case with Ramshot? I only have CCI primers; mainly CCI 200 Large Rifle primers and only one box of CCI 250 Large Rifle Magnum primers. I will be loading .22-250, .303 British and 7x64mm. (load data interchangeable with .280 Rem). Any assistance would be appreciated.

Which powder are you using?

I use TAC in my 5.56 and .308 loadings and don't have issues using regular primers - CCI or otherwise.

Right. Ramshot is the manufacturer, or brand. They produce a line of powders. I’ve used TAC and Xterminator. I’ve never used a magnum primer. See what the load data says and go from there.

I’ve not found that Ramshot powders are any better or any worse than other powders in the same category. They do meter well in manual powder dispensers and in progressive reloading powder dispensers.

That's just fine. I can use standard primers. I have access to most of the range but powder is a bit short supply at times. The gunshop has Tac, X Terminator and Wild Boar; which I understand is only available in Europe. Both are suitable for my needs. It was the primer situation that I needed advice of. I'll pick some up on Thursday. I shall be using it for .303 British and .22/250. Thanks for the feedback.

TAC is one of my "go to" powders It's got published data for the 22-250 with 40-55gr bullets.

Hodgdon doesn't list it with the 303 Brit, but I'm fairly certain it'll work

looked in an older Western Powder PDF manual (pre hodgdon buying them) and they DO list TAC in the 303Brit with 150 and 174gr bullets

In my experience, Western Powders' ballistician had a habit of pushing pretty hard, so I'd work up carefully

Thanks. I had found data online for both calibres so am considering Tac. Ideally I could do with a powder that would suffice for my 7x64mm, rifle in 140 and 150 grain as well. I'm sure something could be worked up for this as well. 7x64mm. is interchangeable in data with the .280 Remington. Ramshot Hunter and Magnum list for the .280 but not the other two. Just being lazy as well as economical. I will be starting with loads on the mid side with the .303 as it is for an old SMLE. Strong rifles but not worth straining. Thanks for the advice so far.

Just looking at Tac which will also do for my .375 H&H. Seems a very versatile powder.

It's similar in burn rate to H4895. Might not be the absolute "best" powder for a specific cartridge, but it works in a LOT of them. On Hodgdon's "Relative burn rate" chart. TAC is #97 and H4895 is #99

Yes, I used to use H4895 but some powders here are getting scarce. I picked up a half kilo tub of Tac which he let me have at a discount. I paid £60 which translates to around $78. Full retail was £69.75 which is just over $90. Not cheap which probably explains why reloading here is not as popular. I can buy loaded shotgun cartridges for less than the price of loading them. Therefore I only load for specific odd shotgun stuff where there is no factory alternative. Just need to pick up some 174 grain .303 jacketed bullets and I'll be in business.

It's versatile enough that I just received another 8# (3.62kg) jug of it, because my old one's getting low

Yet to try it out but reports seem favourable.
