First range trip with my grandsons

Yesterday my oldest son and I took my seven and nine year old grandsons to the range today. This was actually a test run to see if they were big enough to go on a youth ram hunt this fall. Both have been shooting .22's at the ranch but never a scoped rifle. We brought my suppressed 300 BO to shoot a...

Re: My Texas Ram Quest

Wow, you certainly have been busy. Well done Age? Whatchyou talken about? I'm 65 now. The Midnight, Snow Urials, Texas dall were all two year-olds. Most of the others in there two's and three's. I was told the painted desert was a 3 1/2 year old. Depending on the breeder, some two year-olds can be ...

Re: My Texas Ram Quest

I can’t love the fact they will be using a .300 blackout enough. Neither can Zee. 😬 I hear what you're saying. For the kids the suppressed 300 BO has virtually no recoil. Not to mention there are probably 50 to 60 young rams around the feeder area. I don't want a bullet that will blow through the r...

Re: Jeff in Texas

Good to hear from you. I forgot about the name change. Glad you are well. If your Dive plans take you near Pensacola give a holler. The SS United States should be sunk this year. We went on some shark dives off of Jupiter in early April. High winds and seas cancelled all nine dives. We drove across...

My Texas Ram Quest

Every fall my buddy and I try to head to south Texas or Hill Country for some type of exotic hunt. Over the last few years, we've gotten into Texas ram hunts. At my age, there not a super stressful or too taxing hunt on the body. Most hunts were stalks with shots from 80 to 150ish yards. Last fall I...

Re: Jeff in Texas

I'm still around, I've fully recovered from my Covid nightmare of 2020. I pop in and out here to see what's going on. Life's been busy with grandkids and the ranch. Retirement for my wife and I is less than a year away! My wife I dive as often as we can. We leave Wed for a two week diving trip to Co...

Re: 50 year old bow is nearly ready for shooting

Thank for the nice feedback. My problem with bowhunting has always been, I shoot right handed, I'm left eye dominate, but I can't wink or close my left eye when shooting. Hence for rifle shooting I purchased left-handed rifles. Trying to use sights on a bow was impossible. With the compound bow, I s...

Re: 50 year old bow is nearly ready for shooting

Thanks, great input. I was going to use 125 gr field points to practice with. I believe it has a draw weight between 40 to 45 lbs. Plenty for a hog or deer at 20ish yards.

Re: 50 year old bow is nearly ready for shooting

Oh that’s cool. I live hunting with my recurve. Are you going to get carbon fiber arrows? (You should) More than likely. My original arrows were Easton Aluminum arrows, I switch to the heavy Graphflex arrows. They were indestructible. My broadheads were razorback 5. Going light back then wasn't wha...

50 year old bow is nearly ready for shooting

When I was 14 in ‘74 my pop got me a Bear 76er take down recurve bow for hunting. I hunted with it until 78 when I bought my first Jennings T Square compound bow. I found one on eBay for a $100 bucks with straight limbs. This one had a red riser and white limbs. I had a buddy ceracote it to my origi...

Re: I think I've figured out my retirement gig...for this week!

I just pulled the trigger and officially retired ( until some construction company throws a bunch of money at me ). I’ve already got an interview with BassPro and sent my paperwork to reinstate my USCG license. Doubt I’ll be still for long. Good for you. I'm a firm believer, we have to remain busy ...

New slashy stabbing things

Last evening my beautiful bride and I went to the Cross Trail Outfitters Sportsman night and fundraiser. CTO is a Christian base outreach for at risk and underprivileged youths. Great organization. At the door they had different ticket packages for the drawings. These knives were part of the $400 pa...

Re: updated range report, ignore the previous one

Good shooting! Were the Blackout loads subsonic? Reason I ask is that BH is looking for subsonic loads for his and wants a starting point for powders/projectiles.. No, I've given up on subsonic ammo. Since I hunt hogs with this gun, I'd shot handful with subsonic and they ended up as painful ugly d...

updated range report, ignore the previous one

Something went way hinky with my first range report. Hoping the administrators will remove. Let's try this again. I finally got the my Leupold VX7 back from Leupold's repair and mounted it on the .300 BO. I also mounted the new Leupold VX-6 3-18x44 on custom Tikka 6.5 CM and made it out to the range...

Re: Range report

I finally got the scopes on the .300 BO and the Leupold VX-6 3-18x44 on the Tikka 6.5 CM. I got the Leupold VX7 2X7 back from Leopold’s repair center. Cloudy day with winds blowing 15 mph. The .300BO shot fairly well. I mounted the new Thunderbeast 7” suppressor on it. Not the greatest setup for it...

Re: I think I've figured out my retirement gig...for this week!

162.5 acres is giant Texas sized?? Well I was hoping you'd read the sarcasm in that! :D Olney TX is a town of just over 3000 people, The Ace they're building is a scaled down version of a normal Ace. At least this is what we've heard. The other hardware store in town caters to oil workers. I still ...
